The cartridge/needle is moving towards the center of the vinyl along a curve. That is due to the natural design of turntables and their pivot tonearms. Also, the needle and cartridge is more likely to be out of parallel with the grooves on the record as you get closer to the center. The closer you get to the center, the quieter it gets. The needle is travelling over less vinyl per revolution, and the songs have to be compressed even more. There's no getting around that.Īnd, if they have grooves running really close to the label, then those tracks are subject to inner groove distortion. You are amplifying a compressed bass frequency.
